Felix Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 2 was not called that when it was debuted in 1840. It was called Lobgesang (Hymn of Praise), a 13-movement “symphony/cantata,” featuring a choir and vocal soloists. It was dubbed Symphony No. 2 after his death in 1847.
The Cleveland Orchestra will perform the piece this week under the baton of music director Franz Welser-Möst, with the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus, sopranos Christina Landshamer and Martina Jankovám and tenor Julian Prégardien joining them.
The concerts open with 20th century composer Ernst Krenek’s 1979 Static and Ecstatic [Statisch und ekstatisch].Tickets range from $21-$165.
