With the realization settling in that if tRump is to be beaten it’ll be the black vote that tips the election, all of the candidates are coming under the microscope in regards to their record of how they’ve treated minorities over the years — and they all are flawed to some extent, if indeed they have any track record at all with minorities.
As NYC Mayor Bloomberg instituted a “stop and frisk” policy that exclusively targeted minority populations (which was stupid — all he had to do was tell his cops to stop anyone and everyone that was out at night in certain neighborhoods and there would not have been such an uproar), but on the other hand, Biden designed the 1994 Crime Bill that put damn near half as many black folks behind bars as there were slaves in America at the beginning of the Civil War.
The simple fact is, this being America, no white candidate is going to have a sterling track record in regards to their relationship to blacks, and even one black former candidate, Kamala Harris, was consistently accused of supporting policies that were oppressive towards minorities when she was attorney general of California. So in the end, we’re going to be stuck with the lesser of evils.
But since the main point is getting rid of tRump, one candidate will do almost as well as the next. However, no Democrat can win without a huge turnout in the black community. Which brings me back to the hobby horse I’m going to ride until the rails fall off: Michelle Obama running as V.P.
One of the definitions of “noblesse oblige” is that to whom much is given, much is expected. How anyone can think or say that the former First Lady isn’t obliged to do everything in her power to save the Republic is beyond me. All she has to do is put her name on the ballot, she doesn’t even have to campaign. Yeah, she’s got it like that.
Ours is the most fragile form of government to ever have existed, and yes, tRump and his minions want to change our democracy into something totalitarian and nationalistic — in other words, a white-dominated, apartheid-like nation.
It doesn’t take a crystal ball to see where the country will be heading if tRump is not stopped in November. I for one don’t want — in some not-too-distant future — to be standing around peering out at the world through a barbed-wire fence lamenting what we shoulda, coulda or woulda done if only we had been smart enough to see what was coming.
Remember, in the early ’30s most Germans scoffed at the little men strutting around their country in brown shirts, and by the time they woke up a few years later, it was too late. We need to stop this fascist freight train that’s barreling down the tracks this fall and if we don’t the results will be cataclysmic, especially for persons of color.
Michelle Obama running as the V.P. is the only way to win the election and put an end to this existential threat to democracy as we know it. And the decisions as to her running should be ours, not hers. This is about her duty to the country.
Remember something else: There are none as blind as those who flat-out refuse to see.
