Film at Rock Hall Shows Vintage Aretha Gospel Performance

Wed 2/12 @ 7-9PM

The film Amazing Grace focuses on the great soul singer Aretha Franklin as she recorded her live gospel album of the same name in January 1972 at Los Angeles’ New Temple Missionary Baptist Church. The album came out that June but the film encountered numerous obstacles and went through several versions and near-releases before the family arranged for it to be released following Franklin’s death in 2018. It was finally released in April of last year.

The 87-minute final edit features Aretha’s preacher/singer father C.L. Franklin, the great gospel singers James Cleveland and Clara Ward, R&B drummer Bernard Purdie and bassist Chuck Rainey, and even cameos by Mick Jagger and Charlie Watts as they run through a program of gospel classics.

Amazing Grace will screen at the Rock Hall as part of its spring film series. Tickets are $10 for non-members; free for members.
