Just thinking about Akron musician/peace activist/kirtan practitioner/spreader of positive vibes Zach Friedhof makes us smile. He’s been bringing joy and uplifting music to the northeast ohio music scene for two decades, and just released a beautiful new song called “Bridges and Time.” He calls it the “best song I have yet written and recorded,” and whether you agree or not, it joins an already-impressive repertoire spread over 22 albums.
He also assembled an all-star cast for the recording with Gretchen Pleus on vocals, Ben Gage on percussion, Marc Lee Shannon (of Michael Stanley & the Resonators) on guitars and vocals, Matthew DeRubertis of half the bands in Akron on bass Nate Vaill on vocals and Seth Vaill on piano.
Meanwhile, he’s urging folks to join him at “BEYOND WORDS: An Evening of Ecstatic Chant and Silence” hosted by Yoga Summit at The Center near downtown Akron. Several practitioners, including Zach, will lead kirtan chants, a form of meditation, in both English and Sanskrit.
“This event is open to all: even if you haven’t chanted before,” he tells us. “You can participate as much or as little as you feel comfortable. You can also come and go as necessary, so if you can’t stay the whole evening, you can stay for what you can stay for.”
There’s a suggested donation of $10 but no one will be turned away. It’s also a potluck so if you can, bring something to share. Chanting will go on until about 10-11pm.
