Cleveland’s Contemporary Youth Orchestra gives talented young people ages 13-18 the opportunity to play in an orchestra that specializes in contemporary compositions, many of them commissioned or world premieres, where they get to interact with the composer. They’ve also done many concerts with major pop & rock stars such as Tommy Shaw of Styx, Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo, Graham Nash and Bootsie Collins.
Especially talented musicians have other opportunities in small ensembles and in solo slots such as the one that will feature three members at CYO’s upcoming concert. Pianist Brune Boukobza will solo in Dmitri Kabalevski’s Youth Concerto No. 3; double bassist Samantha St. John plays Frank Proto’s Carmen Fantasy; and clarinetist Charlie King is up front in jazz great Artie Shaw’s Clarinet Concerto.
The concert takes play at Tri-C Metro Campus Auditorium. General admission tickets are $15, $10 for students.
