The great David Bowie was born on January 8, 1947 and died on January 10, 2016. In between he made some of the most creative and diverse music anyone has ever heard, augmented by theatrical presentation and distinctive marketing. This week Thomas Mulready and Cleveland glam punk band Vanity Crash celebrate those Bowie landmarks with a birthday show at the Brothers Lounge Wed 1/8 and a weekend at the BOP STOP Fri 1/10-Sun 1/12. Each show opens with a presentation covering a different aspect of Bowie’s life and career, followed by a Vanity Crash set that melds their originals with a flock of Bowie songs.

“This is our chance to peel the onion back more than just one layer and go really deep,” says Mulready. “Even for people who have seen the show before in some form or fashion, they’re going to find new material and new stuff here.” Mulready talks with writer John Benson about how they’re honoring this legend. When the Beachland Ballroom opened on Waterloo Road 20 years ago this March, the bedraggled street started to show signs of new life. The music venue was a catalyst that attracted new shops, galleries and other businesses in the area, making the street a destination for people who didn’t live in the neighborhood.

But keeping the aging Croatian Hall that became the Beachland in good repair has been daunting, which is why some local musicians have joined to host a benefit for the club this Fri 1/10. Beachland co-owner Cindy Barber shared some thoughts about the challenges and successes the club has had in its 20 years. “I do feel like it’s finally North Collinwood’s time,” she says.

Last year the Cleveland Metroparks greatly expanded the number of free outdoor summer concerts it presented at numerous of its locations, hosting more than 65. It’s now put out a call for bands who’d like to be part of the lineup to submit applications through 2/24. All genres, both original and cover bands, are welcome.

Guarantee yourself a seat at every show – and save some cash – by purchasing a full festival pass. The pass is $225 when you buy before the lineup announcement and includes a ticket to all ticketed indoor concerts, an invite to the opening night party and other perks and discounts. Pricing will increase after the lineup announcement. Passes are valued at $450.

This year’s festival takes place June 25-27, 2020 at Playhouse Square. Full lineup will be announced in early February. For more information about the festival, visit Tri-CJazzFest.com.

The answer to that provocative question is “fewer, and fewer people.” A poll was conducted back in the 1970s asking how people felt about their elected officials, and over 70% of Americans responded positively. The same poll was done again last year and only 19% of the citizenry gave a positive response. We have Republicans like Karl Rove & Newt Gingrich to thank…

* Payback? While perceptions far outlast reality, the feeling that blacks are not welcome to operate stalls at the West Side Market still persists to some extent, but it could have nothing to do with current reality. Maybe all of the racist stall operators have by now retired…
