Writer John O’Brien, who grew up in the Cleveland area and graduated from Lakewood High School before moving to the west coast. He published only one novel during his life, Leaving Las Vegas, and committed suicide at the age of 33 shortly after learning it would be made into a movie. Two other novels, unfinished when he died, were later completed later by his sister, Cleveland writer Erin O’Brien, and published, along with a third.
A newly published book called Café Abyss features essays about O’Brien by other Cleveland writers. Contributors including Erin O’Brien, headline reader Sara Dobie Bauer (pictured), Patrick Snee, Matt Marshall and Tanya Pilumeli will talk about the book at the Lakewood Public Library’s main branch.
It’s free and open to the public.
