In his era (the mid-late 19th century), Franz Liszt was as well known as a performer as a composer. Often called “the first rock star,” his pianistic skills were legendary and the music he composed for piano was designed in part to show them off. It’s no surprise that the Who’s Roger Daltry was tapped by the florid director Ken Russell to play Liszt in the 1975 film Lisztomania.
Canadian pianist Marc-André Hamelin will have the chance to show off his own impressive technique when he plays Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with the Cleveland Orchestra this week. The program also includes the symphonic poem, “Isle of the Dead,” by Sergei Rachmaninoff and Danish composer Carl Nielsen’s 19222 Symphony No. 5. Russian conductor Dima Slobodeniouk leads the orchestra.
Tickets are $21-$165.
