Northeast Ohio is a major grape-growing and wine-making region, and local wineries are proud to promote this and to showcase their products in their tasting rooms. It’s what the Winegrowers of the Grand River Valley do with their periodic events organized to get people to try out multiple wineries.
One of those events is Casks, Corks & Forks, now in its seventh year. Debonné Vineyards, Ferrante Winery & Ristorante, Grand River Cellars Winery & Restaurant, Laurello Vineyards and St. Joseph Vineyards will each be offering a taste of the limited release Cask 1019 red wine, and offering an appetizer made with local meats fruits and vegetables to got with it.
To create the Cask wine, each of the five wineries purchased a 500-gallon cask barrel made with oak from different countries and filled it with red wines from their own winery, creating smooth, dry, flavorful wines.
“The first vintage in the barrel was in 2010 and a second vintage was added in 2011 and the 3rd in 2012,” they explain. “This years’ blend was bottled in 2019, thus the name Cask 1019-the year the project started ‘10’ and the year the wine was bottled ’19.’ Each year, 100 gallons will be bottled from these amazing barrels, making room for the next years’ harvest.”
It’s a self-driving tour, with the wineries all located within 10 minutes of each other. Each winery will be charging $6 for a cask wine and another regional wine, plus an appetizer. You can visit all of them or however many you choose.
Since this is harvest season at the wineries, glance around and see if you can catch a glimpse of grape pickers in the field or grapes being pressed, aromas you may pick up a whiff of at some of the wineries.
