This week, we have local author Jill Grunenwald with us to talk about her latest book Reading Behind Bars which is a true insider’s story of of literature, law and life as a prison librarian. The book is out now available at all reputable booksellers and you can catch her locally at book readings and signings including Wed 8/28 at Westlake Porter Public Library and 9/14 at Learned Owl in Hudson.

And we have brand new music from Cleveland’s Uptight Sugar and a track from Daniel Rylander, just one of the 76 local acts announced at this year’s Heights Music Hop happening 9/12-14.

Andy Warhol, Lou Reed, The Velvet Underground and The Exploding Plastic Inevitable

Two giants of 20th Century art and music, Lou Reed and Andy Warhol found each other at critical points in their development. It was 1966 and Warhol was bored with painting and looking to combine all the art forms: visual, film, sound, lights, movement and live performance. Lou Reed was just getting together with John Cale, Sterling Morrison and original drummer Angus MacLise, intent on breaking the rules and exploring a more experimental approach following their garage rock single, “The Ostrich,” on Pickwick Records, intended, and failed, to cash in on the hot trend for ostrich feathers.

“Andy said to me: Whatever you do, keep all the dirty words. Essentially he was saying, Don’t make it slick, Don’t make it smooth and ruin it. And we didn’t,” claimed Lou Reed in a subsequent interview. CoolCleveland’s Thomas Mulready continues his own exploration with a highly researched presentation on the spontaneous combustion of these powerful personalities, combined with the Factory “Superstars” and other key figures who joined forces to create The Exploding Plastic Inevitable, a live touring show that presages modern rock concerts, light shows, EDM and raves. Mulready’s presentation is capped with a sizzling live music performance by Cleveland’s own Vanity Crash, and will be appearing at two venues: BOP STOP in Cleveland on Fri 9/13 and Sat 9/14, then debuting at Jilly’s Music Room in Akron for a Velvet Brunch at noon on Sun 9/22. Join the fun. We double dare you. And yes, we’re keeping all the dirty words.

Neighborhood Pets Outreach and Resource Center was founded in Slavic Village in 2016 as an offshoot of Friends of the Cleveland Kennel to help financially challenged pet owners be able to keep and care for their animal friends. It’s long been their goal to expand to other parts of the city, and they’ve taken the first step to doing that, with weekly clinics in South Collinwood.

While they’re looking for a permanent location (hopefully very soon!), they’ll be setting up on Saturdays at the Five Pointe Community Center across from Collinwood High School. Anyone who lives in Cleveland with income below 150% of the poverty level is welcome to bring their animal for services such as vaccines and flea/tick prevention. Others are welcome to make a donation to keep Neighborhood Pets expanding!

Anyone with even a passing acquaintance of Cleveland’s jazz scene has most likely crossed paths with Jackie Warren. If she’s not behind the keyboard with her own band, she’ll be found rocking the rhythms of Latin jazz with one of Sammy DeLeon’s ensembles, adding her ebullient energy to his lively percussive sound.

She also plays jazz standards & pop tunes after concerts at Nighttown, a regular gig that gave birth to her new album After Hours. “The afterhours Nighttown crowd keep asking me for a recording, because they want to take home that vibe,” says Warren. She’ll debut the album not at Nighttown but at the BOP STOP, where she recorded it. Thu 8/29.

After several years of strategizing and many more years of dreaming, Alison Garrigan launched Talespinner Children’s Theatre is the Detroit-Shoreway neighborhood eight years ago. In that time it’s become known for its multi-disciplinary productions utilizing costumes, masks and puppets, many of which Garrigan makes. She’s now stepping down from her role as artistic director to focus on personal needs although she’ll still be involved. TCT has begun searching for her replacement.

What do you call someone who sets a house on fire and then rushes into the burning inferno and pretends to be putting out the flames so they can claim to be some kind of hero? A flat-out liar would be a good name to start with, and that’s what we currently have in the White House…

* Dirt Bikes and Danger Perhaps it’s because I’ve been riding motorcycles for over 50 years now that I’ve been somewhat sympathetic toward the young people riding dirt bikes and ATVs on city streets. That changed when one of the riders got his bike clipped…

* Gutless While I’m not going to try to pretend to be an armchair legal scholar, I think there might be a way for the legal system to address the problem posed by Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Joseph Russo’s unfair and ridiculous behavior. For those of you not aware…
