Sat 8/17 @ noon-11PM
Visitors to the West Side Market are familiar with St. Emeric’s Hungarian Church which sits just to the northeast of the market’s parking lot. But if you’re not familiar with the culture surrounding it, its St. Stephen’s Day Celebration and Hungarian Festival is a great time to learn more.
As with most ethnic church festivals, there’ll be folk dancing and music, along with traditional foods such as goulash, paprikash and much much more, plus a beer garden (where you can also try palinka, an eastern European fruit brandy) and kids’ activities with — of course! — face painting. There’ll also be a bilingual mass at 5pm, along with a ceremonial blessing of the “new bread.”
Admission is $3; there’s free parking at Lutheran Hospital Lot D and a shuttle to take visitors to the church — essential in Ohio City on a Saturday.
