Hungarian Scout Festival in Parma Offers a Big Dose of Culture — and Food

Sun 9/1 @ 10AM-11PM

Yet another ethnic festival is on the calendar this weekend, this one presented not by a church but rather the American Hungarian Friends of Scouting.

The 64th annual Hungarian Festival takes place at German Central Park in Parma. It opens at 10:30am with the raising of the Hungarian flag followed at 11 by both Catholic and Protestant services. Then line up for the star attraction: the kitchen opens at noon, serving the usual wonderful array of homemade ethnic foods: goulash, stuffed cabbage, sausages, chicken paprikash, crepes, strudel, tortes, fresh-baked bread … yes, you can get it to go if you can’t eat everything you’d like to try on the spot.

There’ll be plenty of entertainment, including the Hungarian Scout Folk Ensemble in traditional costumes, free Hungarian folk dance lessons, and live music by Walt Mahovlich and Harmonia, Alex Udvary and Kálmán Hegedeös, along with DJ Béla Szenta spinning tunes. At 7:30pm in the main hall Hungarian musicians, pianist László Gonda and violinist Ernő Báder, will perform at special concert.

There’ll be plenty more going on as well including all-star soccer matches, a live animal show, a book fair, folk arts and crafts for sale, and free kids’ activities.

Admission is $7 and benefits the Hungarian boy and girl scouts in Northeast Ohio. Kids under 10 are free.
