Spanish classical guitarist Pepe Romero is the son of classical guitarist Celedonio Romero, who was his teacher, and brother of two other noted classical guitarists. His career stretches back 60 years now in which his international reputation has become truly formidable. He performed with his father and brothers as the Romero Guitar Quartet from 1960-1990, and continues now to do some with one brother an two nephews.
Romero will be the guest of the Cleveland Orchestra this week, performing one of the most recognizable and often-performed pieces in the classical guitar repertoire, Joaquín Rodrigo’s 1939 Concierto de Aranjuez. He’ll be playing it both at Severance Hall Fri 7/19 as part of the Summers @ Severance series, and at Blossom Music Center Sun 7/21. Spanish conductor Pablo Heras-Casado leads both concerts, which also feature Claude Debussy’s Images and, on Sunday, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio espagnol. Summers @ Severance also offers the chance to relax o the Front Terrace with drinks before and after the concert.
