Wed 6/19
The week of 6/17-6/23 saw a dizzying various of events surrounding the 50th anniversary of the last Cuyahoga River fire, with Extinguish Torchfest and Cuyahoga50 offering a full calendar.
One of those was the opportunity to walk across the subway level of the Detroit-Superior Bridge from West 10th to West 25th. Typically the Office of the County Engineer offers this chance once or twice a year (and many fondly remember when the Ingenuity Fest used the space from 2009-2011), but it decided t participate in this occasion in a major way. Not only could strollers walk the length of the bridge and take in the breathtaking views of the river and skyline, but British light art collective Squidsoup designed two site-specific light installations — one at the far east end of the bridge featuring horizontal strings of chasing, color-changing lights, and another walk-through installation at the center of the bridge, whose selfie-inspiring properties recalled the Yayoi Kusuma exhibit at the Cleveland Museum of Art last year.
