What do you do when the day you picked for your annual day trip to Put-in-Bay turns out to be virtually nonstop rainy? You go anyway!
While the waves flooded dockside walks and the road along the Perry Monument, inside the Perry’s Cave attractions, such as its lovely butterfly house, there was shelter from the intermittent downpours. Another stop was the Lake Erie Islands Nature & Wildlife Center where animal specimens from around the country provide lessons about their place in their ecosystems and an outdoor pond offered a place of contemplation between showers. And the Chocolate Museum was open for business, with its display of vintage candy boxes and tins, its continual screening of the famous I Love Lucy chocolate-wrapping assembly line episode, and its large selection of chocolates and ice creams for sale.
After a full day, travelers returning to the mainland on the Miller Ferry found the exit ramp awash and went with the flow, taking off their shoes and taking selfies splashing in the ankle-deep water. Who says you can’t have fun in the rain?
