Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church sits conspicuously with its golden domes on West 14th Street at the foot of the freeway entrance, serving as a gateway to the Tremont neighborhood.
And for almost 50 years, its annual Memorial Day weekend Greek Festival has served as a gateway to summer. It features food, drink and entertainment both inside the church hall and outside in the parking lot. Like a lot of ethnic church festivals, the food is the main attraction: traditional foods made by church members. If you have a hankering for spanikopita, souvlaki, mousakka or baklava, you won’t find better, with Greek spirits to wash it down (watch the ouzo — it’s powerful!)
Greek dancers and musicians provide diversion as you eat, and once you’re done, you can browse the vendors with an array of items from the Old Country. Be sure to take some time for a tour of the beautiful church which is celebrating its 100th birthday this year.
The festival is free and open to all.
