Sat 5/11 @ 8PM
In the mood for some blues harmonica? The Northeast Ohio Blues Association is presenting an evening featuring young and old blues harpists from around the region. Cleveland blues lovers will of course be familiar with singer, songwriter and harp player Wallace Coleman, who played with Robert Lockwood Jr. for 20 years before forming his own Wallace Coleman Band in 1997, playing international blues festivals and releasing five albums under his own name. He’s a blues institution in town.
At the other end of the spectrum, harp player/vocalist Jake James Friel is only 23, but he’s been playing since he was 8. He hails from Canton where he leads a band called the Brighter Side which won the Canton Repository’s Battle of the Bands when Friel was just 14.
And finally, another youngster, Clevelander Jarred Goldweber, rounds out the bill. He and his band the Park Brothers have performed extensively around northeast Ohio as well as such historic blues meccas as Clarksdale and Memphis, modernizing traditional blues to draw in new listeners.
Following the show, which takes places at the Beachland Tavern, there’ll be an open jam. Admission is $10.
