THUG LIFE, a concept coined by Tupac Shakur, remains a symbol for the cyclic nature of systemic racism; it stands for: The Hate You Give Little Infants F**** Everybody. This is the central theme in the 2017 novel written by Angie Thomas, which later become the basis for the 2018 film by the same name.
The Capitol Theater will be hosting a free screening of The Hate U Give on Wednesday, February 13th at 7pm, followed by a discussion with local program Neighbor Up. Founded by grassroots funding source Neighborhood Connections, Neighbor Up hopes to fight against the “de-humanizing systems that are reinforcing and exacerbating the fear and isolation that diminish us as humans and divide us as a community.” In this safe space, the audience and Neighbor Up representatives will be able to examine and talk through the heavy, but important, themes this movie presents.
Tickets will not be available online prior to the event. Beginning at 6pm, tickets will be distributed on a first-come basis at the Capitol Theater box office.
