Wed 3/6 @ 6:30-8:30PM
In the second act of this two part series, the Cleveland Democratic Socialists of America hope to educate the public on how white nationalism has functioned here in Cleveland, and how we can successfully combat it. In the first session, DSA representatives recalled the history of white nationalism in the country, in greater Cleveland, and more commonly now on the internet.
They highlighted the major turning points in American history, the different forms in which racism thrived from slavery to Jim Crow to Eugenics to Alt-Right chatrooms discussing actual organizing techniques and praising Donald Trump. DSA reps compare the anonymity that white hoods provided for KKK members to the veil the internet provides today. they will look deeper into the recent hate crimes. In 2017, a man living in Ohio attended a “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, and drove his car into a crowd of peaceful counter-protesters, killing activist Heather Heyer. The 2018 Tree of Life shooting in Pittsburgh shows continued anti-Semitism that must be addressed. Hate crimes are not uncommon. DSA will also analyze the racist dog whistles used in today’s political dialogue to covertly continue to implement discriminatory policies, and the context of free speech.
