Sun 2/10 @ 7PM
It’s kind of surprising that more people don’t know about blues guitarist/vocalist Rory Block because she’s been around a long time. She actually got a false start as a teenager in the 60s, hanging around the Greenwich Village folk scene where young upstarts mingled with the legends of American roots music, including old blues masters.
But she began her career in earnest in the mid ’70s, recording albums that mixed traditional and original acoustic blues, combining the oddity of a young woman playing blues guitar with stunning good looks. Now 69 (and still very attractive), she really hasn’t slowed down. Recently, she’s released a series of tribute albums honoring some of those old masters and influences: Mississippi Fred McDowell, Rev. Gary Davis, Mississippi John Hurt, Skip James and last year, Bessie Smith.
She’ll be at Nighttown for a special solo show. Tickets are $20.
