Post-Hiroshima, in the 50s, people became obsessed by the potential evils of nuclear energy and the effects of the radiation unleashed by splitting the atom. This fear was expressed out in horror films such as the 1954 movie Them!.
In this black-and-white film, one of many similar ones from the time period, ants, grown to giant size by radiation, escape the New Mexico desert (a site of nuclear testing in the 50s) and make their way to Los Angeles, endangering everything in their path.
How plausible is this scenario? Come to the Capitol Theatre for a screening of the film, part of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History’s Reel Science series, and stick around for a post-film discussion by a representative from CMNH’s Department of Invertebrate Paleontology, who will poke holes in the science underlying the film
Admission is $8, $6 for CMNH members.
