The Pith and Root of Sleep Brings Artists Together for Improvisational Performance at Doubting Thomas Gallery

Fri 11/16 @ 7PM

When The Pith and Root of Sleep, directed by Matt Kiroff, perform, you never know what to expect — and neither do they, for the most part. Within a framework, the musicians, dancers and visual artists who make up the loose-knit ensemble improvise as they interact.

For their performance at Doubting Thomas Gallery in Tremont, the musicians will play an hour’s worth of free jazz while dancers perform with a bed of nails that bisects a mannequin, as they work on the theme of how women’s bodies are controlled under fascism. If that doesn’t sound odd enough, they promise, “There will also be large amounts of corn.” In addition, they say “A processional though out the gallery and onto the street may ensue!” The art will stay in the gallery.

Dancers include Irene Honora, Rachael Ahn Harbert and Marianne Brass. Kiroff plays micro-tonal electric piano; he’ll be joined by violist Jenna Barvitsky, harpist Stephan Haluska, sax player Alex Henry, contra-bass flutist Michael Billings, reeds plays Stephen Frollo and bassist Rick Kodramaz.

Visual artists on display in the gallery include fabric artist Stephanie Oyuela, video artists Cynthia Penter and Michael Rivera, painter Scott Pickering, magnetic tape artist Scott Alan Evans, Rowan Leek’s “plant amplification” art, and the CIA sound design compendium.

It’s free and open to all. Performance starts at precisely 7pm; you can come at 6 to look at the art.
