The #MeToo movement has many mothers; no effective movement is ever the work of only one person. But if it can be said to have a wellspring, that would be New York activist Tarana Burke, who was using the phrase “Me Too” to refer to the prevalence of sexual assault more than a decade ago, long before the hashtag went viral in 2017. The 45-year-old has spent her adult life fighting for racial and economic justice and gender equity, as well as working to raise awareness of sexual violence and to give victims a voice and tools to recover. Her organization Girls for Gender Equity works to empower young women of color.
She’ll be speaking at Case Western Reserve University’s Maltz Performing Arts Center as part of its Think Forum lecture series. CWRU’s Flora Stone Mather Center for Women and Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio are partners in presenting the event.
It’s free and open to all. Reserve your tickets here.
