As the ’80s wended into the ’90s, music changed dramatically. On the front end, hair metal bands, like dinosaurs, were wiped out almost overnight in September 1991 when Nirvana’s Nevermind hit the streets and labels began looting college radio playlists and the rosters of indie labels like Sub Pop, Touch & Go and Matador for their next signing.
But underneath the increasingly popular “alternative” bands was a strain of metal- and punk-influenced music that just kept getting heavier and heavier … and heavier … until you were surprised it didn’t just sink of its own weight.
One such band was New Orleans’ Eyehategod who started making their sludgy sound in 1988. They have trudged on pretty much intact since then, despite health issues and the death of a member, and managed to extrude five almost desperately heavy albums.
The group returns to the Grog Shop, with an even older band, New York hardcore punk thrashers the Cro Mags, formed in 1981, and Cleveland’s Fuck You Pay Me, fronted by the irrepressible wildman of Cleveland punk rock, Tony Erba.
Tickets are $20 in advance, $22 at the door.
