No matter how cold it gets around here in winter, we’ve all learned that spring is right around the bend.Brazilian transplant and guitarist/vocalist/composer Luca Mundaca will incorporate jazz, bossa nova and world music at her heartwarming Valentine’s Day show at BOP STOP, “to sing songs from my heart to their hearts, bringing to them love, romance and happiness.”
Bonfoey Gallery celebrates a sizzling 125 years in business, Afi Scruggs stimulates young fevered minds in a workshop on lyric writing at Heights Music Shop, and Prosperity Social Club is frying up fish for Lent with all the fixings, just as their establishment has been doing for 70 years.
Scorching hot burlesque at The 9, the incandescent Roomful of Teeth at Oberlin, the fiery Africa->West Trio in residence at BW, a blistering Contra Dance at the Fellowship Hall in Chagrin Falls, and the Electric Pressure Cooker Cabaret series lights up Jilly’s in Akron. Pop the champagne corks! Cleveland’s Bonfoey Gallery is, incredibly, celebrating 125 years in business. In that time, it’s had several locations before its current one at PlayhouseSquare. It’s expanded from a framing business to one that restores, ships and stores art, hosts exhibitions and represents dozens of artists, including some of the region’s top names.

Guitarist/vocalist/composer Luca Mundaca may have to shovel more snow now that she’s a Cleveland resident than she did back in her native Brazil. But she can still tap into her native country’s musical heritage, something she does regularly on local stages.
She’s currently working on a new album she says will incorporate her jazz, bossa nova and world music influences. Meanwhile, you can hear her danceable music at a special Valentine’s Day show at the BOP STOP. “What all the songs have in common is that they are romantic,” Mundaca said. “People should spend Valentine’s Day with me because I want to sing songs from my heart to their hearts, bringing to them love, romance and happiness.” Wed 2/14.

Combining personal storytelling and social commentary, NYC-based, Ohio-native jazz trombonist and composer Sam Blakeslee releases the Sam Blakeslee Quintet debut, Selective Coverage. The new album features many of Blakeslee collaborators over the years – Brandon Coleman on guitar, Jorn Swart on piano, Cory Todd on bass, and Dan Pugach on drums.
CoolCleveland’s Stephan Haluska got a chance to meet up with Blakeslee at the BOP STOP, while he was en route from NYC to Columbus to find out more about Selective Coverage and his upcoming tour. The Sam Blakeslee Quintet performs two nights in NE Ohio, at BOP STOP on Fri 2/16 and BluJazz+ on Sat 2/17.
Four Cleveland Orchestra members, who moonlight as the Amici String Quartet, will be playing the next in their series of Beethoven concerts for Arts Renaissance Tremont.
