Akron Instrumental Surf Rockers purplE k’niF Play the Beachland

Sat 9/30 @ 8:30PM

Cleveland baby boomers who cut their teeth on the Ghoulardi Show in the early/mid ’60s will know where local instrumental surf rock band purplE k’niF got its name: it was one of the legendary horror film host’s catch phrases. And the band members have memories of Ghoulardi from their childhood.

“He successfully polluted our minds at an early age,” they claim.

The band, which has been kicking, around albeit not that actively, for 25 years, includes Akron’s Chris Butler, of Waitresses and Tin Huey fame on “aquamarine sparkle drums,” Bob Basone (who played with the Walking Clampetts, the Action and Wesley Bright & the Hi-Lites) on “sunburst bass guitar,” Walking Clampetts Johnny Teagle on “orange lead guitar” and Ted Lawrence on “blue lead guitar”

The group plays both originals and classic cover tunes, both obscure ones and big hits, on the vintage instruments they love to collect and play.

“There will be nothing on the stage that was made after 1966…including us,” they proclaim.

They’ll be playing at the Beachland Tavern with veteran Detroit garade/punk band the Britemores. Admission is $10.

Cleveland, OH 44110
