It seems like we’re seeing more work in encaustic all the time. Undoubtedly that’s because this layered, wax-based process creates subtle, diffuse color effects and a three-dimensional look that results in evanescent, soft-edged works that often convey an almost dream-like feel.
Loftworks Gallery’s next show, Wildlife in Wax, features the encaustic work of Clevelander Derek Brennan, who goes one step beyond encaustic to create collages that feature paper clippings and other materials to add even denser and more complex layers to his work.
In addition to showing his work, Brennan will move his studio to Loftworks during the run of the show, where he will host open studios on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays @ noon-5pm to give visitors a glimpse into his process. And on Sat 7/8 @ 1pm he’ll host an artist talk to share what he’s trying to accomplish and how.
The show will be on view through Sun 7/23.
