Since Cleveland musician/educator Roberto Ocasio died in a one-car accident on an icy day in January 2004, his friends and family have kept his memory and his life’s work alive with the annual Roberto Ocasio Latin Jazz Camp to share the music he cared about so much with an upcoming generation.
Now in its 13th year, New York-based percussionist Bobby Sanabria, Ocasio’s former classmate from Berklee College of Music, returns as usual to lead the camp as its artistic director and artist in residence. And after a week of educational activities for the youth grades 8-12 who participate, the event culminates with the annual Roberto Ocasio Latin Jazz concert.
The free concert will take place this year at the Cleveland Museum of Art. Campers and faculty members will perform in the concert led by Sanabria. Malo guitarist Jorge Santana, who also serves as a clinician at this year’s camp, will appear with the young musicians as special guest artist.
