Back in the ’90s when Tremont was just emerging from its down-in-the-mouth years to become Cleveland’s next hot neighborhood, attorney Jean Brandt opened a gallery in her storefront law office. With other gallerists and artists starting to pop up around the area, she launched the Tremont Art Walk, which was one of the art calendar’s biggest monthly draws for years.
She retired from the art game a couple of years ago and last year, the Tremont Art Walk was retired as well, as many of the galleries closed and were replaced by restaurants, shops, wine bar and cocktail lounges as the area became chic.
But Tremont wasn’t throwing in the towel. Instead it re-invented the art walks as Walkabout Tremont to take into account the host of new businesses that had come to the area. It kicked off last May with art openings, street performers, live music, pop-up vendor booths lining Professor Avenue, and food & drink specials at area businesses. Each month has had a different, often seasonal, theme.
It’s now throwing a bash to celebrate its first anniversary, and the theme is “Come Out & Play.” Again there will be street performers up and down Professor, including Dr. U.R. Awesome, the Guinness World Record holder for the largest indoor and outdoor soap bubbles, a student art show featuring more than 100 artists, horse-drawn carriage rides, live music, classic board games, children’s art activities, and specials at various participating businesses.
And yes, art openings too. They still have those. There will be a couple of dozen businesses showing art, ranging from actual galleries such as Doubting Thomas, the Giancarlo Calicchia Gallery and the Robert Hartshorn Gallery, to coffeeshops, cafes, bars, record stores, ice cream shops and more.
