West Virginia-raised Tim O’Brien, who plays guitar, mandolin and fiddle, has been a mainstay of the bluegrass/newgrass since his days with Hot Rize in the late 70s. He moved to Colorado where he co-founded that group, which rose to prominence as bluegrass innovators who helped cross the music over to a wider audience.

Hot Rize broke up in 1990 (they’ve reunited occasionally for some shows here and there) and O’Brien went on to a production and prolific solo career that has netted him a couple of Grammy awards including in 2014’s Best Bluegrass Album.

He’s now out on tour celebrating his latest album Where the River Meets the Road, celebrating the traditional music of his native West Virginia. He’ll be performing at the Kent Stage with Athens, Ohio-based bluegrass veteran, 77-year-old JD Hutchinson, several of whose tunes were recorded by Hot Rize, and whose latest album, last fall’s You and the World Outside, was co-produced by O’Brien. Vocalist Jan Fabricius also performs with them. Tickets are $25.
