“Biomimicry” is one of those trendy words you may have heard bandied around. But what is it and how does it inform scientific and engineering problem solving?

You can learn the answers to those questions at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History’s monthly adult party, Think & Drink With the Extinct. It’s really pretty simple — it refers to looking at how nature solves a problem and applying that to what humans create.

Great Lakes Biomimicry, which is propelling biomimicry efforts in northeast Ohio, will be there to explain their work, as will Stephen Howe, a biomimicry fellow at the University of Akron Biomimicry Research Innovation Center, who is exploring how aquatic organization move through fluids. Other experts will be talking about the mechanics of animal locomotion and how hedgehogs inspired impact protection technology.

There’ll also be a biomimicry scavenger hunt so you can learn from the museum’s exhibits. A bar will have wine and beer available for purchase and Exploration: A Zack Bruell Restaurant will be open if you’re hungry. It’s $8 for non-members, free for members. Take in a Planetarium show for only $5 more.
