Vocalist Vanessa Rubin is one of many Cleveland-raised jazz musicians who have moved on to New York City to pursue their craft on a larger stage. She headed there after graduating from The Ohio State University in the ’70s, and she’s done well, for herself performing with jazz legends like Toots Thielemans, Grover Washington, Jr., Herbie Hancock, the Woody Herman Orchestra, and the Jazz Crusaders.
She’s also become known for her skillful interpretations of Billie Holiday tunes, which she’s performed both as part of a one-woman show channeling Holiday in her own voice, and in her concert and nightclub sets. But she can navigate a lot of musical ground in her shows, drawing all her experience together to deliver performances with both depth and breadth.
She joins the parade of home-for-the-holidays musucians when she performs at Nighttown. Tickets are $30.
