One of our favorite artist buildings to visit is the Lake Erie Building aka the Screw Factory in Lakewood. It’s a little rougher than the popular artist-dominated 78th Street Studios, and there’s still active industry on the first floor, while artists fill spaces on the second and third.
But there you’ll find a cadre of the area’s most talented and industrious creatives of all kinds, ranging from furniture designer/maker Freddie Hill, who won a Creative Workforce Fellowship this year, to ceramicist Gina DeSantis, whose spacious studio not only overflows with her own work but also offers a multitude of equipment and supplies for students and independent studio work for others interested in working in the medium. Photographers, painters, jewelers and more abound. Be sure to check out Martha Cliffel’s sly, funny, colorful assemblages that comment on culture and religion.
The building’s two-day 9th annual Holiday Open Studio offers the opportunity to meet some of these artists, and check out and buy their work.
They’ll also be collecting food donations for St. Augustin’s and the Lakewood Community Service Center. So if you’ll feeling generous bring along a non-perishable edible.
