The 2016 summer season out at the SNPJ Slovenian Farm in Kirtland is winding down, but it’s going out with a bang. This weekend’s Polka Brunch and dance will feature music by noted button box player and Polka Hall of Fame Button Accordionist of the Year Kathy Hlad.
Immersed in Slovenian culture and the Cleveland Slovenian community as a child in the ’60s, she began playing traditional Slovenian music publicly before she was in her teens. Her bio interestingly refers to her father’s initial reluctance to let her play button box because “Girls don’t play that kind of music.” This “girl” has become one of the style’s leading players, performing at polka festivals and Slovenian cultural events across the country.
The event will also feature food, of course, and lots of it, including buttermilk pancakes, sausage (Slovenian, we presume!), baked egg strata, Slovenian Potatoes, pastries, fruit, juice and coffee. After all that eating, you’re going to want to get out on the dance floor to shed some calories.
Brunch is served from 10am-2pm. Hlad and friends take the stage from 11am-2pm. Donation is $12, $6 kids 12, and you can pick up tickets at the Polka Hall of Fame in Euclid. Proceeds go toward a new roof at SNPJ Farm.
