There must be something in the air. Cleveland baroque ensemble is incorporating the music of composer/arranger/Duke Ellington collaborator Billy Strayhorn into its season opening program.
And now Nighttown is welcoming Cuban jazz reed player Paquito D’Rivera and pianist John Di Martino to play an evening of Strayhorn’s music.
While D’Rivera is widely known for his Latin jazz, he’s also an accomplished classical composer with fourteen Grammys and nearly three dozen albums as a bandleader. Di Martino has recorded numerous albums with his own trio, but he’s also worked as an arranger, sideman or composer for Joe Lovano, Kenny Burrell, Diane Schuur, Pat Martino and Jon Hendricks, among others.
They’ll be bringing a quartet which also includes Mark Taylor on drums and Boris Kozlov in acoustic bass to perform some of the legendary material Strayhorn wrote for the Duke Ellington Band’s repertoire — a repertoire which includes Strayhorn classics such as “Take the ‘A’ Train,” “Lush Life” and “Lotus Blossom.”
Tickets are $40.
