Rock guitarist Dweezil Zappa juggles two missions that aren’t as incompatible as you might think: keeping alive the legacy of his father Frank Zappa, who died in 1993, while simultaneously creating his own. The now 47-year-old musician was already establishing himself as a formidable player by the time he was in his mid teens, releasing his first two albums before he turned 20.

Since 2006 though, most of his work has been with Zappa Plays Zappa, a touring/recording project involving a changing lineup that tackles different aspects of his father’s complex and far-reaching music. But last year he released an album of his own called Via Zammata, his first since 2006.

He and his band are back at the Kent Stage for the first time since its release for a show he’s calling the “Dweezil Zappa Plays Whatever the F@%k He Wants! The Cease and Desist Tour.” The tour’s name is a reference to an ongoing intra-family battle prohibiting him from touring as “Zappa Plays Zappa.” Regardless, he’ll be celebrating the 50th anniversary of the release of Freak Out!, the groundbreaking debut album by Frank Zappa’s Mothers of Invention.

Tickets range from $33-$65.
