Luckily the stock idea that kids think vegetables are “yucky” is starting to fade away. But the real challenge is getting them excited about eating more veggies and less McDonald’s.

Local artist Linda Zolten Wood, who also has a passion for sustainability and healthy food issues (she’s the force behind the Collinwood Painted Rain Barrel Project), has come up with something to pique their interest. She’s created “Operation: Vegetables — The Giant Board Game of Yummy Health.” It’s a 12 x 12 foot game board in which children become the game pieces.

She’s unveiling it at a free family event at the Memorial Nottingham Library in North Collinwood. There will be fresh bites from Kimberly Homan, an instructor at Sur La Table, healthy variations on Puerto Rican food from Ramona Pacheco and fresh ice pops from Kayla Palmisano. Various other Collinwood-based projects and businesses will be on hand as well, and acoustic guitarist Doug Wood of Cellocentric with be playing music.

Kids will have the opportunity to check out the library’s vegetable garden box, see the painted rain barrel at the library, meet the new children’s librarian and get a library card. And of course, they can play the game, which can be reserved for groups, clubs and events over the winter.
