With so many college and university jazz programs, northeast Ohio is overflowing with incredible jazz musicians who also teach. That should make it easy to stock the Cleveland Greats Concert Series at the Bop Stop, curated by bassist/composer Aidan Plank, celebrating musicians based in the Greater Cleveland area with music and conversation.

It kicks off this week with trumpeter Jack Schantz, director of jazz studies at the University of Akron and artistic director of the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra for more than two decades (1994-2009). Schantz performed with Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, the Glenn Miller Orchestra, the Artie Shaw Orchestra and the Woody Herman Thundering Herd and played in pit orchestras for touring musicals at PlayhouseSquare. He continues to perform and do master classes around the world when he’s not teaching and performing closer to home.

Schantz will perform with Plank on bass, Theron Brown on piano and Jim Rupp on drums. It’s $15 or $50 for the series, which will feature Howie Smith on Thu 12/15, Bob Fraser on Thu 2/16/17 and an artist to be decided on Thu 5/18/17.
