The closing of many of its churches by the Cleveland Catholic Diocese raised a lot of controversy and angered many long-time Catholics. That anger was raised to the boiling point when Bishop Richard Lennon announced the wholesale closing of 50 churches in 2009.
Many of those churches contained statues and other artwork that was precious and meaningful to the former congregants — often created by their own ancestors and much of it beautiful apart from its religious connotations. So it was a joyous occasion when the Museum of Divine Statues opened in one of those former churches, St. Hedwig’s, in 2011, with a mission to rescue and restore some of those icons and preserve local Catholic history.
That museum is hosting a benefit to further its work. The event, hosted by Fox19’s Todd Meany, will include appetizers, desserts, wine, beer, a silent auction, raffles and of course, the chance to see some of works they’ve rescued. Tickets are $75; call 216-712-7094 or go to museumofdivinestatues.com/tickets.
