It’s hard to believe the Grog Shop is 24th years old. The club opened on the corner of Mayfield and Coventry in Cleveland Heights in 1992, just as a sea change was happening in music, with former indie bands rising in Nirvana’s wake to wider attention and previously very obscure bands now finding audiences.

Along with Derek Hess’ Monday night shows at the Euclid Tavern down the hill, the Grog Shop was the place to check out such intriguing bands as Love Battery, 7 Year Bitch, Doo Rag, Laughing Hyenas, Babe the Blue Ox and many more. It was also a bastion of local music, with bands such as Mushroomhead playing one of their earliest shows there.

So many bands have come and gone, but the Grog Shop keeps chugging away. It moved to a more prominent location in the middle of Coventry Road in 2003 and continues to book music anywhere from 5-7 nights a week. Salute Kathy Simkoff Blackman and her crew for all they’ve done for the local music scene.

They’re celebrating tonight, appropriately, with a lineup of local bands including Ma Holos, Heavenly Queen, Wolf Pack and Fascinating who will be celebrating their record release. Admission is $5.
