The story of Cleveland auto worker John Demjanjuk is a complicated one. Demjanjuk, a Ukrainian immigrant who died in 2012 at the age of 91, was living quietly in retirement in a Cleveland suburb when he was identified by Holocaust survivor as a particularly cruel guard at a Polish concentration camp.

From then until his death, the debate continued. Was he that person or misidentified? If not, was he a guard in some other camp? And what would be the appropriate charges for such a person? He was deported, convicted, had his conviction overturned, returned, was deported and tried again and eventually died in a nursing home in Germany.

Amherst College professor Lawrence Douglas, who covered the saga’s final chapter and wrote a new book called The Right Wrong Man: John Demjanjuk & the Last Great Nazi War Crimes Trial, will speak at Case Western Reserve University’s School of Law about what he learned. The program is free and open to the public.
