Cleveland’s Slavic Village, until the end of the 20th century a solid working-class ethnic enclave, was nearly swept off the map by the foreclosure crisis of the ’00s. In fact, it was referred to by some sources as “ground zero” for that crisis.
The neighborhood has slowly been righting itself with new housing, new businesses, gardens, public art. One of its main thoroughfares, Fleet Avenue , has been undergoing a transformative streetscape, and new businesses such as the Saucisson meat market are in the pipeline.
Slavic Village Development Corporation celebrates all these developments at the Magalen art space on Fleet Avenue. Succession’s lady butchers, Melissa and Penny, will be providing the appetizers to go with the beer and wine. Artists who participated in last summer’s Rooms to Let: CLE have donated artwork for purchase. And those who have recently made a significant impact on the neighborhood will be honored. Tickets are $50 (which includes food, wine and beer), or $25 for people who actually live in Slavic Village.
