Call it the “Live Aid” of women’s reproductive rights. OK, maybe it’s not QUITE as big as the 1985 concerts — one in Philadelphia and one in London simulcast around the world — held to relieve hunger in Africa.
But All Access — focused on making abortion accessible to all women who need it, not just the affluent — will feature big names in music and comedy with events in more than 30 different cities. And appropriately, considering the avalanche of attacks on women’s access to the full spectrum of reproductive health care coming from our anti-choice governor and legislature, Ground Zero will be Cleveland.
That flagship event will take place at the Wolstein Center. Actress/comedian/former Daily Show correspondent Jessica Williams will host, and performers will include Australian songwriter/pop star Sia (“Chandelier”), comedian/SNL cast member/movie star (the new Ghostbusters) Leslie Jones (who will forever be a hero for stage-whispering when Ann Coulter walked into a club she was in, “What the fuck is this frightening bitch doing here?”), and Mexican pop/rock star Natalia LaFourcade.
Tickets are free; go here. Do not even THINK of trying to go disrupt the event because Jones will publicly humiliate you too. (Did I mention she’s six feet tall?) Lineups for Chicago, Atlanta, Philly and Miami will be announced soon, and many smaller cities will have auxiliary events as well.
Sponsors include ACLU, Advocates for Youth, All* Above All, Center for Reproductive Rights, NARAL Pro-Choice America Foundation, National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum, In Our Own Voice: National Black Women’s Reproductive Justice Agenda, National Council of Jewish Women, National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health, National Network of Abortion Funds, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, URGE: Unite for Reproductive & Gender Equity, SisterSong and Whole Woman’s Health.
