Expedition: Spaces II is described as “a guided journey of words, sights and sounds.” That, the fact that it’s at the cutting-edge SPACES Galley and curated by local musical adventurers Craig Chojnicki and Lisa Miralia, should tip you off that you’ll be going to some strange and interesting places without leaving Superior Viaduct.
Performers from Cleveland, as well as Minnesota and Germany, will be making full use of the space and augmenting their presentations with projections, spoken word and performance elements to provide stimuli for the eyes as well as the ears in a series of very different performances.
Minnesota’s Tim Kaiser, like many performers in experimental music, creates his own instruments to go beyond the boundaries of what standard instruments are capable of. He’s known for combining acoustic and electronic elements to produce brand news layers of sound. Cleveland’s Machine Listener aka visual/sound artist Matthew Gallagher also invents his own tools. He launched his project using electromagnetic radiation from household devices, which he’s now combining with synthesizers to generate new sounds.
Marcia Custer, Alyssa D’Amico and Beth Lomske, all from Cleveland, will present a new piece titled “Are You Afraid of the Light,” exploring “friendship, fear, and the cyclical nature of leaving.” Guitarist/composer Mike McNamara mixes found sounds and electronics with his instrument as he collaborates with multi-media artist Nathan Melaragno who will provide psychedelic-style analog liquid light projections. And poet-playwright John Burroughs will move the audience from gallery to gallery as he responds to the other performers with improvised poems.
Finally, underground vinyl DJs Dan Cook and Marc Lansley bookend the evening spinning selections from the far reaches of electronica.
A ticket for this trip is $10, with all money going to the performers.
