The stars came out to kick off Tri-C JazzFest at the Connor Palace Thursday night with an early 80th birthday salute to superstar producer Tommy LiPuma, whose name is on the Creative Arts Building at Tri-C’s Metro campus. Born and raised on the east side of Cleveland, he began producing hit records by the mid ’60s.
On this special night, he was feted by some of the stars he produced, including Dr. John, Leon Russell, Al Jarreau, Diana Krall and another Cleveland boy, trumpeter Dominick Farinacci. The whole evening was hosted by jazz bassist Christian McBride, with the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra providing impressive backup to all the artists. And yes, there was birthday cake.
