The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble are like Chicago’s version of the Marsalis family — only there’s even more of them. The band features seven blood brothers, plus one, who were started down the path by their trumpet player/band leader father Kelan Phil Cohran, who has played with artists like Chaka Khan, Sun Ra and Earth Wind & Fire.
The kids started playing as the Phil Cohran Youth Ensemble 26 years ago, then moved out from under their father’s wing to form the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble in 1999 and release their debut album in 2001. The jazz-based group has now showcased its unique sound all over the world, merging hip hop, contemporary R&B and classic soul into its aggressive brass sound.
The group will be performing at Cain Park’s Evans Amphitheater. Tickets are a mere $15, $10 for kids 13 and under. So bring the whole family and dance up a storm.
