The Kidney brothers — guitarist/vocalist Robert and multi-instrumentalist Jack — have been the mainstays, along with sax player Terry Hynde, of Kent’s Numbers Band for most of its 46 years. Although the band has never had any mainstream success, it’s become something of a legend for its distinctive blue-based rock with an angular jazz element to it. It’s hard to believe when you listen to Robert Kidney’s unbalanced wail that he was once on track to be a folksinger.
Over the years, they’ve put out a recording here and there, a schedule that seems to have stepped up in recent years. (Their 1974 debut, Jimmy Bell’s Still in Town, was re-issued on Exit Stencil Records in 2013). And this weekend, both brothers will be releasing new CDs and celebrating with a double release party at the Beachland Ballroom, a great time to catch these northeast Ohio legends if you never have, or haven’t recently.
Robert Kidney will be launching a solo release on Exit Stencil called Jackleg, while Jack Kidney, performing with the Numbers Band, will release Sealing Up the Past. On Jackleg, Robert Kidney performed all the self-written material solo in single takes, accompanied only by his acoustic guitar. The album was produced by former Pere Ubu bassist Tony Maimone. Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door.
