On Wed 2/25, members of the media and the arts community were treated to a preview of Myopia, the two-part show by Akron native Mark Mothersbaugh, opening Fri 2/27 at MOCACleveland and Sat 5/28 at the Akron Art Museum.
The group gathered at MOCA to hear short presentations by MOCA director Jill Snyder and Adam Lerner, the curator who assembled the show originally for the Museum of Modern Art Denver, as well as Mothersbaugh himself, and to see MOCA’s segment of the show, dedicated primarily to Mothersbaugh’s work with his band DEVO and his other sonic explorations.
They then boarded a chartered bus where they enjoyed a special Myopia ice cream concocted by Mitchell’s (available to the public at all Mitchell’s stores throughout the summer), classic candies courtesy of Big Fun’s Steve Presser, and the chance to ask Mothersbaugh more questions.
At the Akron Art Museum, they were greeted by director Arnie Tunstall before touring the section of the show dedicated to Mothersbaugh’s visual art including manipulated photos, sculpture, video and a room featuring notebooks that contained the postcard-sized drawings he has done almost every day for more than four decades that serve as material for his other art.
