PHOTOSTREAM: Blessing Ngobeni at the Cleveland Print Room by Anastasia Pantsios

Wed 5/18-Sat 6/4

South Africa’s Blessing Ngobeni is one of the current crop of Cleveland Foundation Creative Fusion artists who have been working here for the last couple of months. And Ngobeni has created fusion work indeed: blending his African sensibility with the vibe he’s picked up while in northeast Ohio, and collaborating with Cleveland painter John W. Carlson on several pieces as well. The result is nearly 20 colorful, action-filled collage/paintings as bustling, chaotic and packed with imagery as a busy metropolis — whether Cleveland or his native Johannesburg — and combining the excitement and violence, the exuberance and the injustice, endemic to urban life.

The exhibit In Unknown Space: The Work of Blessing Ngobeni at the Cleveland Print Room will offer a look at the work he’s made during his stay here. Its official opening is Fri 5/20 @ 5-8pm and it will be on view through Sat 6/4. But it opened with a members preview Wed 5/18 attended by some of the area’s hardcore art lovers. Here’s a sneak peek. This is a powerful, accomplished and provocative show you don’t want to miss.
