It’s National Ride Your Bike to Work Day, which dovetails nicely with Cleveland’s Year of Sustainable Transportation. And while the Greater Cleveland area isn’t ideal for riding a bicycle as transportation, more and more people are doing so anyway.

Naturally Bike Cleveland, which exists to encourage people to get out of their cars and on to bikes, has some rewards planned for those who do. They’ve set up “Energizer Stations” around town (Downtown, University Circle, Lakewood, Cleveland Heights) offering free Phoenix Coffee and breakfast snacks to riders during the morning commute.

Greater Cleveland RTA is getting into the act too, in case the weather’s bad or you part of your commute isn’t bicyclable. On National Bike to Work Day passengers with bikes ride free all day. RTA will also have a bus parked downtown demonstrating how to use the front-loaded bike racks in the buses. Hit up Bike Cleveland’s website for Energizer Station locations and more activities.

Then on Sunday 5/22, Bike Cleveland will have its second annual Bike Awareness Ride where cyclists can join a four- or 10-mile ride with the goal of reminding both cyclists and motorists that they are sharing the roads and need to be aware of one another.

Register outside Nano Brew in Ohio City starting at 9am; the ride rolls off @ 10am near W. 25th and Bridge behind Nano. Joy Machines Bicycles will be there if you need your bike checked before the ride. The ride ends at Market Garden Brewery, a few blocks from the starting point, where there will be brunch specials and socializing. It’s an adult event but children are welcome if accompanied by a parent.
